Description: |
An indigenous Seletar sea gypsy having a meal of fried fish and rice at her village home in Johor. The orang asli Seletar are a sub-group of the Proto-Malay. These gentle boat people are believed to be the descendants of the Spice Island's infamous South-East Asian pirates. Apart from fishing, many still harvest produce from the sea and mangrove areas, catching crabs, prawns, mussels and such for personal consumption and trade. |
