Description: |
Indigenous Semai womenfolk wear woven leaves while performing the traditional 'Tarian Sewang'. In the Semai language, the dance is called 'gedeng'. One dancer sings and leads while the others dance to a soulful rhythmic beat produced by pounding bamboo on rocks. The Sewang was performed a long time ago when the Semai still practiced animistic beliefs. It was performed to heal the sick by chasing evil spirits away. The Semai are now predominantly of the Christian faith. |
