Location: Long Belok, Sarawak
Description: Penans of Long Belok prepare a poison (tajem) to lace the tip of their blowpipe darts (belat). Once dipped into this extremely potent concoction, the darts are left to dry then stored in a bamboo container (tabo) which is tied around their waist when hunting. The poison is made from the sap of the Ipoh tree (antiaris toxicaria) and sometimes mixed with a kind of leaf to make it even more potent, depending on the size of animal being hunted. Even the fumes are potent, which is why huts like the one featured here where 'tajem' brewed, is located far away from the village.
